CAF Confederation Cup: Wydad AC punished after red card as OC Safi advance on away goals
Olympique de Safi are through to the semi-finals of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup after overcoming Wydad AC over the course of two legs.
The two Moroccan top-flight clubs locked horns on Sunday night in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
With the first-leg meeting ending in a 1-1 draw last weekend, both teams went into the contest determined to secure victory to progress to the next stage of the competition.
Unfortunately, for Wydad AC, the team suffered a major setback in the first 30 minutes of the first half.
Goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid was sent off in the 24th minute, altering the plans of the side and forcing them to play the rest of the match with 10 men.
Capitalising on the numerical advantage, OC Safi stepped on the gas and piled pressure on Wydad AC. The pressure paid off in the 40th minute when they won a penalty kick. Sofian El Moudane accepted responsibility from 12 yards and scored to break the deadlock.
After going behind, Wydad AC regrouped and found a way back before halftime. Mohamed Moufid found the back of the net in added time to force the two teams to go into the break on level pegging.
When the second half resumed, it was evident that the two teams were ready to give everything. In the pulsating encounter that ensued, injury-time goals from Moussa Kone and Hakim Ziyech cancelled out as the game ended 2-2 at the end of the 90 minutes.
With a 3-3 aggregate scoreline, OC Safi have eliminated Wydad AC from the CAF Confederation Cup and are through to the semi-finals.
