South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has reaffirmed his unwavering trust in Evidence Makgopa, insisting the Orlando Pirates forward remains his first-choice striker for Bafana Bafana.

Despite competition for places and Makgopa’s inconsistent game time at Orlando Pirates, Broos made it clear that the lanky frontman continues to deliver where it matters most—on the international stage.

Makgopa has once again been included in the South African squad set to face Panama national football team in two international friendlies during the upcoming FIFA international break. The matches will be staged in Durban and Cape Town, offering Bafana Bafana another opportunity to build momentum.

Broos emphasized that consistency is a key factor in his selection decisions, particularly for strikers, and believes Makgopa embodies that quality when given the chance.

“You know we are talking about consistency, and for strikers, I like that,” Broos said.

The Belgian tactician also drew comparisons with another trusted forward, Lyle Foster, highlighting how reliability in front of goal has earned players his confidence over time.

“Lyle never disappointed me, I think in every game he played at the 2025 AFCON he scored,” Broos added.

Turning back to Makgopa, Broos acknowledged that while the striker may not always be a regular starter at club level, his work ethic and impact in national colours have been undeniable.

“It is the same thing with Makgopa, even though he doesn’t play regularly at the moment for Pirates,” he explained.

The coach also recalled the skepticism that once surrounded his decision to include Makgopa in the squad, noting how the forward has since silenced critics with his performances.

“Two years ago, everybody was asking, ‘Where were you taking Makgopa?’ but you saw what he did at the AFCON. So he’s always there, he’s always the guy who works hard.”

In a strong statement of faith, Broos concluded that Makgopa’s place in the team is secure—at least for now.

“I will not drop him before I see someone who is much better than him.”

With the upcoming friendlies on the horizon, Makgopa will be eager to repay that trust once again, as he looks to cement his role as Bafana Bafana’s leading attacking option.
