Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike delivered a blunt assessment of his side’s dominance after their emphatic victory over Galatasaray, insisting the scoreline could have been far heavier on a ruthless night in Europe.

The forward was on target as Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 win on Wednesday, sealing a commanding 4-1 aggregate triumph to book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Ekitike’s goal capped a performance defined by relentless attacking intent, with Liverpool creating a stream of chances that repeatedly exposed Galatasaray’s defensive frailties.

Despite the comfortable margin, the Frenchman suggested the final score did not fully reflect the scale of Liverpool’s superiority across both legs.

“I think we deserve to be here. We’re really happy. I think we did a great job tonight. We could win 10-0 because we missed a few chances! But we still did a good job and we can be proud of us tonight. We can look forward to the quarter-final,” he said.

Liverpool set the tone early, controlling possession and pressing aggressively to deny their opponents any rhythm. Ekitike was central to that approach, constantly stretching the backline and finding space in dangerous areas. However, he admitted there was a sense within the team that more goals were there for the taking, particularly before the break.

“I think we needed this. We missed a few chances at the end of the first half. Even myself when I sat in the locker room at half-time, I was thinking that we needed to keep this game. I had my chances and I could score more tonight, to be honest.”

The breakthrough after the interval, sparked by Ryan Gravenberch, appeared to lift any lingering tension, allowing Liverpool to play with greater freedom and confidence. From that point, the Premier League side tightened their grip on proceedings and ensured there would be no route back for Galatasaray.

“But I had my chance and then I think we felt more free. Ryan (Gravenberch) scored straight away and I think it helped the team. Everybody did a great job running for each other and that’s why we won tonight.”
