Gor Mahia apologise to fans following shock Kenyan FA Cup round of 32 exit

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, managed by Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor, suffered a stunning early exit from the FKF Cup after a 1-0 defeat to minnows BB Bread in the Round of 32 at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The upset sparked an emotional response from club official Sally Bolo, who apologised to supporters after the Kenyan Premier League heavyweights were eliminated by a side competing at a lower level.

“As someone who lives and breathes this club, evenings like this hurt deeply,” Bolo told Flashscore. “At Nyayo Stadium, we watched Gor Mahia fall 1-0 to BB Bread, a painful exit from the FKF Cup, especially against a side playing in the same tier as our youth setup. Football can be brutally cruel sometimes.”

The result marks a significant setback for Akonnor’s side, who had entered the competition hoping to mount a serious challenge for silverware. Gor Mahia reached the Round of 32 following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Dero FC, while BB Bread had already signalled their giant-killing intent by eliminating rivals AFC Leopards in the previous round.

Despite making ten changes to his starting line-up, Akonnor’s team dominated possession in the early stages and looked the more threatening side. However, they struggled to break down a disciplined BB Bread defence that remained compact and organised throughout the contest.

Forward Ben Stanley came closest to opening the scoring for Gor Mahia, but his effort was comfortably handled by the BB Bread goalkeeper. The underdogs adopted a patient defensive approach, soaking up pressure while waiting for opportunities to strike on the counter.

After a goalless first half, the pattern continued in the second period with Gor Mahia pushing forward but failing to convert their chances. BB Bread’s resilience was ultimately rewarded in the 84th minute when Denis Muthini struck the decisive goal, completing another remarkable cup upset.

“To the K’Ogalo faithful, I feel your disappointment, and I share it,” Bolo added. “We take responsibility, we reflect, and we regroup. This badge demands better, and we will rise again.”

Elsewhere in the competition, defending champions Nairobi United advanced emphatically with an 8-0 thrashing of BMC All Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex. Former Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla scored twice, while Brian Magare also grabbed a brace to keep Nairobi United on course to defend their crown.

Former winners Kakamega Homeboyz also progressed after defeating Kipchimchim 3-0 at Bukhungu Stadium, with Oliver Majaka netting twice before Eston Omengo sealed the result.

Meanwhile, amateur outfit Kuta Collections FC remain the only non-league team left in the tournament after edging KSG Ogopa FC 1-0 at Kasarani Annex to reach the Round of 16.

Somali international midfielder Ibrahim Elias Ahmed scored the decisive goal in the second half, tapping in from close range after sustained pressure in the opposition box.

The remarkable cup run is even more notable given the club’s modest circumstances. Without a permanent training ground or major sponsorship, Kuta Collections rely heavily on friendly matches and support from well-wishers, including Pura Vida Sports Africa and player-coach Augustine Mtiang’a Kuta.

“We don’t have sponsors yet but our mission is to have the best team competing locally, and eventually play in the Premier League,” technical bench member Elias Makori said.
