Moroccan striker Munir El Haddadi leaves Iran amid security concerns
Moroccan international Munir El Haddadi has offered to terminate his contract with Iranian club Esteghlal FC due to recent security tensions in the country.
According to sources, El Haddadi no longer wishes to continue his career in Iran and is seeking an amicable termination to explore opportunities in a more stable environment, both personally and professionally.
The 30-year-old striker, who previously played for top Spanish clubs including FC Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, and Getafe, left Iran overland for Turkey after flights were cancelled due to security concerns.
He subsequently traveled to Spain, where he remains while discussions over his contractual status continue.
El Haddadi explained on Instagram that he had initially planned to leave Iran by plane, but the flight was cancelled, forcing passengers to disembark.
He also thanked Esteghlal FC for assisting his departure, providing transportation to the Turkish border that ensured his safe journey to Europe.
The Moroccan forward joined Esteghlal FC in September 2025, marking his first professional experience outside Europe. At the time, he described the move as fulfilling both his sporting and financial ambitions.
“My transfer to Esteghlal fulfills my sporting and financial ambitions,” El Haddadi stated.
With his contract now under review, the next few days are expected to determine the striker’s future. He is reportedly eager to resolve the situation quickly, allowing him to move on from his Iranian experience and pursue a new sporting challenge in a more secure environment.
Observers note that El Haddadi’s situation highlights the impact of geopolitical instability on professional footballers and the decisions they must make to safeguard both career progression and personal well-being.
