Benin midfielder Mariano Ahouangbo scores on debut for Gandzasar
Benin international Mariano Ahouangbo made an immediate impression in Armenian football by scoring on his debut for FC Gandzasar Kapan as the country’s top division returned following its winter break.
The midfielder, nicknamed “The Cheetah”, delivered a standout performance in his first start for the club during a 2-2 draw against title contenders FC Urartu in the Armenian Premier League.
With Gandzasar entering the match as clear underdogs against one of the league’s strongest teams, Ahouangbo quickly drew attention by opening the scoring in the 13th minute.
Operating in midfield alongside Ofoeke Emmanuel, the Beninese player showed little sign of needing time to settle into his new surroundings.
His early goal provided a strong start for Gandzasar and demonstrated the energy and attacking presence he can bring to the team’s midfield.
Although the home side produced a determined performance throughout the match, they ultimately had to settle for a draw against opponents widely regarded as favourites in the competition.
Even so, the performance left a positive impression for Gandzasar supporters, particularly given the club’s current situation in the league standings.
The team has been experiencing a difficult campaign in the Armenian top flight and remains close to the relegation zone. As a result, the arrival of Ahouangbo is viewed as a potential boost as the club attempts to improve its results in the second half of the season.
The midfielder only arrived in Armenia recently after seeking more regular playing opportunities to continue his development in Europe.
Ahouangbo moved to the continent last summer from Avenir Sportif de Soliman before signing a long-term contract with Slovenian side NK Olimpija Ljubljana that runs until 2029.
However, limited playing time prompted him to look for a temporary move where he could feature more consistently.
In February, he joined Gandzasar on loan in the hope of gaining valuable match experience. His debut performance suggests he could play an important role for the Armenian side during the remainder of the campaign.
For Gandzasar, the draw against a leading team may offer encouragement, while Ahouangbo’s promising start indicates that the club’s new signing could become a key figure as they fight to move away from the bottom of the table.
