Arne Slot hails Cody Gakpo influence in Wolves win

Arne Slot was quick to underline Cody Gakpo’s influence after Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Wolves, praising the forward’s intelligent movement and work in the build-up to key goals.

While much of the post-match focus centred on Andy Robertson’s goal and assist, Slot repeatedly highlighted how Gakpo’s positioning unlocked space for his teammates.

Slot explained that Robertson’s opener came from a “20-yard shot” that grew out of smart link-up play between Gakpo and Mohamed Salah before the ball broke to the left-back. He stressed that it was not a clear-cut chance, but a situation Gakpo helped create through his work off the ball and combination play in the final third.

The Dutch coach then pointed to Liverpool’s second goal, where Gakpo again dropped deep as a central striker to switch play and spark the move that ended with Salah finding the net.

Slot praised Gakpo for “a very good role” in both of the first two goals, underlining how his selfless play and understanding of the system are becoming vital to Liverpool’s attacking rhythm under the new manager.
