The Moroccan national team is entering a new chapter as preparations begin for the next World Cup under fresh technical leadership, following the resignation of head coach Walid Regragui.

Reports from Foot Mercato indicate that the decision has already been made, with his assistant emerging as the leading candidate to assume control of the Atlas Lions.

Regragui’s departure comes after an intense period marked by mounting public and media scrutiny. Although he guided Morocco through a competitive spell that included a run to the final of the last Africa Cup of Nations, the campaign ultimately ended in defeat to the Senegal national football team.

According to reports, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has formally accepted the resignation and has already begun putting structures in place for the post-Regragui era. Over the past few days, all legal and administrative formalities were concluded, with the former coach signing documents to officially terminate his contract, drawing the curtain on what many consider a golden period for Moroccan football.

Attention has now shifted to 49-year-old Mohamed Wahbi, who has emerged as the frontrunner to lead the national team. His candidacy is strongly backed by his impressive work with Morocco’s under-20 side, where he steered the youth team to a historic campaign at the World Cup.

That achievement is said to have earned him the confidence of federation officials, who believe he is well-positioned to oversee the next phase of the national project.

As part of efforts to reinforce the technical bench, Portuguese coach Joao Sacramento is reportedly being considered as a key addition to the new setup. Sacramento, 37, boasts experience working alongside elite managers such as Jose Mourinho and Christophe Galtier, a background that could provide valuable tactical depth to Wahbi’s prospective tenure.

With changes underway, Morocco now looks ahead to rebuilding momentum and shaping a new identity as it prepares for the challenges on the global stage.
