Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor urges Gor Mahia to stay focused as Kenyan Premier League title race tightens

Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor has urged his players to maintain composure as the Kenyan Premier League title race intensifies, following a weekend of high drama in Nairobi.

On Saturday, Gor Mahia stretched their lead at the summit to nine points with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Mathare United at Nyayo Stadium, but that was cut to six by AFC Leopards.

Akonnor insists the job is far from done. “Six points gap is good, but it is not over. We still have to keep going,” Akonnor told Flashscore.

“We still have to believe in ourselves…we have to continue to work, continue to believe in ourselves and see what happens at the end of the season.”

As the league enters its decisive phase, Gor Mahia lead with 49 points from 22 matches, while AFC Leopards have 43 points, and Shabana sit on 40 from 23 matches. With the gap narrowing and tensions rising, Akonnor’s call for calm and focus may prove decisive in whether Gor Mahia can reclaim the crown from Kenya Police FC.

The title chase was further complicated by AFC Leopards, who revived their championship hopes with a commanding 5-1 triumph against Shabana FC on Sunday.

AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani remained measured despite the result, emphasizing the importance of taking “one game at a time.” Shabana coach Peter Okidi, meanwhile, criticized AFC supporters for disrupting the rhythm of his team, claiming the crowd had influenced the match outcome. “Even their fans were playing the game,” Okidi lamented, acknowledging the players’ efforts but condemning the disorderly conduct in the stands.
