Algeria midfielder Houssem Aouar eyes national team return

Houssem Aouar has reignited his club career at Al-Ittihad, delivering a run of performances that could reshape his role with the Algerian national team.

After missing the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in December through injury, the attacking midfielder was left on the sidelines during a key period for Algeria.

His absence deprived the team of his creativity and technical influence in midfield, and marked a frustrating chapter in what has often been an inconsistent international journey.

Since then, however, Aouar has responded with renewed form in Saudi Arabia. The former Olympique Lyonnais player has become increasingly influential for Al-Ittihad, particularly following the departures of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté.

In recent weeks, he has assumed greater responsibility within the squad, contributing both goals and assists while shaping attacking play.

Aouar has been directly involved in six goals across Al-Ittihad’s last six matches, underlining his growing impact.

His technical quality and composure have positioned him as a central figure in the team’s attacking structure.

The timing of his resurgence could prove significant. With upcoming training camps and major competitions on the horizon, including the World Cup, Aouar’s improved form sends a clear signal to Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković.

Petković may consider recalling the midfielder during the March international break, offering him a renewed opportunity to establish himself more firmly in the national set-up.

Aouar’s performances for Algeria have previously shown promise but lacked consistency, leaving questions about his long-term role within the squad.

Now appearing more mature and confident, the 25-year-old faces a pivotal moment. Should he translate his club form onto the international stage, he could yet secure a prominent place in Petković’s plans.

For Aouar, the recent run is not only about statistics but about reclaiming momentum. After setbacks and missed opportunities, he appears determined to redefine his standing — both at club level and with Algeria.
