Morocco U20 gaffer Mohamed Wahbi set to replace Walid Regragui as Atlas Lions head coach

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation are considering to appoint Moroccan U20 gaffer Mohamed Wahbi as the new coach of the Atlas Lions.

Wahbi, who spearheaded Morocco’s U20 side to a historic World Cup glory in Chile is expected to take over the main national team, replacing Walid Regragui.

Per reports, the Moroccan FA will part ways with Regragui before the 2026 World Cup tournament, with Wahbi set to lead the Atlas Lions at the global showpiece.

The decision signals a bold transition for the Moroccan FA, who are seeking to reshape the future of the senior national team.

Wahbi’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Known for his modern tactical approach, emphasis on youth development, and ability to instill discipline within his squads, he built a strong reputation at youth level before earning this landmark promotion. His success on the global stage with Morocco’s U20s demonstrated his capacity to compete — and triumph — against elite opposition.

Taking charge of Morocco comes with immense expectations. The Atlas Lions have grown into one of Africa’s most respected sides in recent years, with continental dominance and strong global performances elevating their profile.

Regragui’s tenure brought stability and belief, but the federation appears ready to turn the page. Wahbi’s appointment suggests a desire for continuity blended with renewal — potentially integrating more emerging talents into the senior fold while preserving the team’s competitive edge.

For Moroccan supporters, anticipation is already building. The coming months will reveal how Wahbi’s transitions from youth success to managing established stars on the international stage. His philosophy, squad selections, and tactical imprint will be closely scrutinized as he prepares to officially assume the role.

Regragui led Morocco to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on their home ground, but missed out on the ultimate title after narrow defeat to Senegal.

He has been coaching Morocco since August 2022 and led his country’s team to a historic achievement by securing fourth place in the 2022 World Cup.

The global showpiece, to be co-hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico will feature an expanded 48 countries, with Morocco securing one of Africa’s automatic nine slots for the tournament.

The North African powerhouse are paired in Group C alongside record World Cup winners, Brazil, European side, Scotland and Haiti.

Morocco will open their account at the global showpiece in a high-stake clash against Brazil, followed by Scotland. The Atlas Lions will wrap up their group game against Haiti.
