Man United step up chase to sign Spanish-Guinean full-back Alejandro Balde

Manchester United’s search for stability on the left flank has intensified, with fresh confirmation that Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde is firmly under consideration at Old Trafford.

Recruitment chief Christopher Vivell is understood to be driving the interest as the club reassesses its options in a position that has lacked consistency in recent seasons.

United’s current left-back department features Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, Tyrell Malacia and Diego Leon. Yet uncertainty surrounds each of them.

Shaw remains one of the squad’s senior figures, but with his contract running until June 2027, the club could weigh up a long-term transition as early as next season. Injuries have also disrupted his rhythm in recent campaigns, prompting internal discussions about succession planning.

Dorgu, signed in February 2025 with a view to inheriting the role, may not be confined to defensive duties. Recent reports suggest United view the Dane as a potential attacking option on the wing, a tactical shift that would reopen the vacancy at full-back.

Malacia’s future appears even less certain. The Dutchman was unable to secure a January exit and is widely expected to move on in the summer to revive his career with regular minutes elsewhere.

Against that backdrop, Balde has emerged as a compelling solution. Reports in Spain earlier this week indicated that United are exploring the framework of a €40 million package for the 22-year-old.

Speaking to The United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed that Balde is indeed on the Red Devils’ shortlist, reinforcing claims that the interest is more than speculative.

Vivell, who has long admired the defender’s athleticism and attacking thrust, has presented the proposal to senior decision-makers. However, no formal approach has yet been lodged, as the club continues to evaluate whether to advance negotiations.

Any deal would require more than a transfer fee. Balde is settled at FC Barcelona, the only club he has represented since rising through the academy ranks. Born in the Catalan city, he is deeply rooted in the institution and remains part of their long-term project.

To prise him away, United would likely need to table a competitive salary package and assurances over his role in the starting XI.
