Liverpool are pushing to secure Ibrahima Konate on a new contract, with Arne Slot making clear the club want the French centre-back to remain at Anfield.
Konate, signed from RB Leipzig in 2021, is entering the final months of his current deal, and negotiations with his camp have been ongoing for over a year as Liverpool look to protect one of their most important defenders.
Speaking about the situation, Slot said: “We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want. It’s clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so let’s see where that ends. We wouldn’t be in negotiations if we didn’t want him to stay.”
The Dutchman also highlighted how vital Konate and Virgil van Dijk have been, praising their recent fitness and partnership at the heart of the defence.
Slot acknowledged that while Konate has made occasional mistakes that led to goals, his overall performances have been strong.
He described Konate and Van Dijk as “vital” not only for their quality but also because Liverpool have limited options behind them, underlining why tying the 26-year-old down to a longer deal is such a priority.
