Liverpool’s agreement to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet has sparked controversy in France, with World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry launching a scathing critique of the transfer and branding the Premier League champions as ‘suckers’ for agreeing to the sizeable fee.

The Reds have finalised a deal worth up to £60 million for the 20-year-old centre-back, with the transfer scheduled to be completed in the summer as manager Arne Slot continues to shape his long-term defensive project.

Liverpool beat competition from Chelsea to secure Jacquet’s signature, with the highly rated Frenchman widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.

Dugarry launches scathing criticism

Despite Jacquet’s rising reputation, Dugarry has questioned the financial logic behind the transfer, suggesting Rennes have capitalised on Liverpool’s willingness to spend heavily.

The former France international insisted his criticism was not directed at the player but rather the scale of the deal.

“This isn’t meant to offend the player; he’s not to blame and we wish him well because he’s a good player,” Dugarry said. “But when you find clubs willing to pay that type of money, you have to congratulate Rennes. They have managed to find a sucker in Liverpool.”

Dugarry’s remarks reflect growing concern in European football about escalating transfer fees for young players, with Jacquet’s price tag placing him among the most expensive defensive prospects in recent years.

Pressure mounts on young defender

The hefty valuation is expected to bring immediate scrutiny when Jacquet arrives at Anfield. Dugarry warned that the transfer fee could create intense pressure for the defender, potentially influencing how his performances are judged.

“This isn’t just about two levels of football anymore. The market has lost its sense of proportion,” he added. “For Jacquet, this move will come with enormous expectations. Even though he’s a talented player, he will arrive under immense pressure, and his performances will be judged differently.”

Liverpool, however, view the signing as a strategic investment in the club’s defensive future. Jacquet joins teenager Giovanni Leoni, who arrived from Parma for £26 million last summer, as part of Slot’s vision to build a youthful, long-term defensive foundation.

While debate continues over the transfer fee, Liverpool remain confident Jacquet possesses the potential to justify the investment.
