Ademola Lookman has said he felt both pride and responsibility in choosing to join Atletico Madrid, describing his move to the Spanish club as a “blessing” following his official unveiling on Tuesday.
The Nigerian international was presented as Atletico’s newest signing after completing a transfer from Atalanta Bergamo, despite being close to a move elsewhere during the winter transfer window.
Speaking to the club’s media for the first time, Lookman outlined the factors that influenced his decision to commit his future to the Madrid-based side.
Although interest from Fenerbahçe was strong and talks had progressed, Lookman ultimately opted for a switch to La Liga, sealing a move reportedly valued at 40 million euros.
The forward explained that the stature of the club and discussions held prior to his arrival played a key role in shaping his choice.
During his presentation, Lookman spoke of his emotions at joining Atletico and the sense of honour attached to wearing the club’s colours, while also acknowledging the wider significance of representing Nigeria on a major European stage.
“It’s a blessing for me to be here. I’m very happy. It’s fantastic for me to be here. It’s a great responsibility to represent my country, but it’s also a pleasure to wear the colors of such a special club as Atletico. So I’m very proud. I had a good conversation with Diego Simeone before arriving,” Lookman said.
The move marks a new chapter in Lookman’s career after his spell in Italian football, as he prepares to test himself in Spain’s top division.
Atletico’s reputation for competitiveness and strong identity were central to his thinking, as he outlined during his first appearance as a club player.
Lookman’s comments reflect both excitement and awareness of expectations as he begins life in Madrid.
With his transfer now complete, attention will turn to his integration into the squad and his contribution on the pitch, as Atletico continue their domestic and European campaigns.
For the Nigerian forward, the decision to join Atletico represents more than a change of clubs, combining personal ambition with the honour of representing his country at one of Europe’s most established teams.
