Liverpool have reportedly beaten Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea to the signing of Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, agreeing a £60 million deal for the 20-year-old French centre-back.
Jacquet is expected to undergo his medical today ahead of a summer transfer to Anfield. Despite never featuring for France’s senior team or playing in the Champions League, Jacquet has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after defensive talents.
The France Under-21 international of Ivorian heritage has made 18 appearances for Rennes this season and has been a regular at youth international level, highlighting his potential and versatility.
According to Sky Sports Deutschland, Manchester United also lodged a bid for Jacquet during the January transfer window, but it was unsuccessful as Liverpool had already moved decisively to secure the talented defender.
Chelsea were similarly linked with the player, but the Premier League champions wasted no time in completing negotiations, ensuring Jacquet would head to Anfield.
Liverpool’s interest comes amid pressing defensive concerns. Virgil van Dijk will turn 35 in July, and Ibrahima Konaté’s contract is running down, leaving manager Arne Slot in urgent need of reinforcements at the back.
Jacquet’s arrival is seen as a long-term solution to bolster the centre-back department, giving Liverpool both youth and quality in a crucial area of the squad.
Jacquet will become the second central defender to arrive at Anfield from Europe this season, following Giovanni Leoni’s £26 million move from Parma last year.
