Egyptian outfit Al Masry have disclosed defender Baher El Mohamady will undergo surgery in the coming hours following an injury setback in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash at the weekend.
The 29-year-old centre-back suffered a broken collarbone on Sunday, as his outfit succumbed to a 2-0-1 defeat to Zamalek in the fourth round of the group phase.
El Mohamady was replaced in the 70th minute by Ahmed Ayman Mansour following the setback.
A statement from Al Masry reads, “Baher Al-Mohammadi will undergo surgery in the next few hours at one of the specialized orthopedic surgery centers in Cairo after suffering a broken collarbone.”
“Following the operation, the player is scheduled to undergo a recovery period before beginning rehabilitation physiotherapy training until he is fully recovered and can then rejoin the team’s training sessions.”
Despite the setback, the defender has expressed gratitude to God, while seeking for prayers from the fans as he seeks for a swift return to action.
Baher El Mohamady wrote on his Instagram account: “Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you. Praise be to God in good times and bad. Fractured collarbone… Your prayers are needed.”
Baher El Mohamady joined Al Masry from Ismaily in the summer of 2023 on a 3-season contract for 20 million Egyptian pounds. He renewed his contract with the Egyptian club for two seasons, extending it until 2028.
Zamalek leads the Confederation Cup group with 8 points, while Al Masry has dropped to second place with 7 points, the same as South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs. Zesco United of Zambia are bottom of the group with no point.
