Riyad Mahrez believes Al Ahli have enjoyed a good share of luck during their recent matches in the Saudi Pro League, but insists that consistent performance remains essential to winning the title.
The Algerian star shone again as Al Ahli thrashed Al Ettifaq 4–0 on Wednesday in matchweek 19 of the Roshn Saudi League.
Speaking after the game, Mahrez said: “We need to rest a little, then start focusing on facing Al Hilal, and we must close the chapter of the Ettifaq match.”
He added: “There are no secrets behind the victories, but we are lucky at times, and that gives us strength, along with our ability to deliver good performances.” Mahrez stressed that lifting the league trophy will demand huge effort, explaining: “Winning the Saudi league title requires a lot of work, and we have to beat Al Hilal first, then keep working in the same way in the coming matches.”
Al Ahli’s emphatic win took their tally to 43 points, placing them second in the table, just two points behind leaders Al Hilal, who face Al Qadsiah on Thursday.
The two sides will meet on Monday in a high-stakes clash in round 20 that could shape the remainder of the title race.
