The Algerian Football Federation has initiated talks with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as a potential successor to Djamel Belmadi, according to Algerian sources.
This development comes in the wake of the official announcement by Walid Sadi, the president of the Algerian Football Federation, regarding the termination of the contract with Belmadi.
Algeria Sport, citing its exclusive sources, disclosed the commencement of negotiations between the Algerian Football Federation and Queiroz for the position vacated by Belmadi.
The report highlighted a growing conviction within the Algerian Football Federation regarding the Portuguese coach’s suitability for the role.
Queiroz previously managed the Egyptian national team in the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, guiding them to a runner-up finish after losing to Senegal in a penalty shootout.
This move follows Algeria’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 in the group stage for the second consecutive time, following their elimination in 2021.
Belmadi took charge of the Algerian team in August 2018, leading the Desert Warriors to their second Africa Cup of Nations title in 2019.
However, Belmadi faced disappointment as Algeria failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after a defeat against Cameroon in the final stage of African qualifiers.
In total, Belmadi managed the Algerian national team in 67 matches, securing victories in 43 games, drawing 17 times, and suffering seven defeats.
Under his tenure, Algeria scored 142 goals while conceding 53.
The negotiations with Queiroz mark a new chapter for Algerian football, as the federation seeks fresh leadership to steer the team towards future successes.
