Gaëtan Bong has made a move to the Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus, and in an interview with RMC, the Cameroonian left-back discussed the reasons behind his departure from the northern region of France.
Bong explained, “I had one year left on my contract and I had an exit voucher. The club no longer really had the means to keep me. I wanted to leave while ensuring that Valenciennes took money.” He expressed his desire to give back to Valenciennes, the club that had supported him over the years, by ensuring they received some compensation for his departure. Bong wanted the club to have funds to bring in a replacement for him, stating, “They had to get some money so they could take a player to replace me. If it was to go free in a year, that wouldn’t have been fair on my part.”
Having joined Valenciennes in the summer of 2009 from Metz, his training club, the 25-year-old Cameroonian international played 110 Ligue 1 matches with Valenciennes and was under contract until June 2014.
