Mamelodi Sundowns have strongly denounced the actions of a small group of supporters following last Friday’s CAF Champions League draw against Al Hilal, after senior members of the club’s technical leadership were subjected to intimidation outside the stadium.

The incident occurred at Loftus Versfeld after Sundowns were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by the Sudanese side in their group-stage encounter.

Emotions ran high among sections of the crowd, and tensions spilled over beyond the final whistle, with sporting director Flemming Berg reportedly having liquid thrown at him, while head coach Miguel Cardoso was also threatened as the technical team made their way out of the venue.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Sundowns made it clear that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

“Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” the club said.

While reaffirming its commitment to supporter engagement, Sundowns stressed that passion must be accompanied by respect.

“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy,” the statement continued.

The club went further to warn that firm action would follow, adding: “Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches.

“Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns Supporters.”

Sundowns also appealed for unity during a demanding phase of the season. “The Players and Technical Team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the League Title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters.”

Notably, the club’s response came four days after the incident, prompting questions about the delay. The unrest is not new, with Berg and Cardoso having previously been targeted by disgruntled fans, including banners calling for their removal during a match at Atteridgeville earlier this season.

Sundowns now turn their attention back to the pitch, hosting Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday before travelling to neutral Rwanda for a return Champions League meeting with Al Hilal on Friday.
