Senegal secured their Africa Cup of Nations title with a tense 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco, but the dramatic final was overshadowed by controversy that continues to stir debate after the final whistle.
Pape Gueye, who scored the decisive goal in the 2025 AFCON final, has spoken openly about the chaotic closing moments of the match, including a late penalty awarded to Morocco and the unusual reaction from the Senegalese team.
The midfielder acknowledged that Senegal briefly made the wrong decision when they left the pitch in protest after the penalty was given. Head coach Pape Thiaw had instructed the players to walk off, a move that risked severe consequences in the closing stages of the final.
“We are only human, we realized our mistake and we came back onto the pitch. Everyone can make a mistake,” Gueye, 26, said, according to AFP.
The incident occurred shortly before Morocco’s Brahim Diaz stepped up to take the penalty, opting for a Panenka attempt that was ultimately saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. The miss proved decisive, allowing Senegal to hold on and claim the continental crown.
Gueye admitted he was taken aback by Diaz’s choice of technique in such a high-pressure moment, questioning the level of risk involved.
“It was audacious and I wouldn’t have taken that risk myself,” he said.
While reflecting on the confusion, Gueye was keen to single out the influence of Senegal captain Sadio Mané, who played a crucial role in restoring calm among his teammates. Mané remained on the pitch while others left, urging them to return and see out the match.
“He found the right words at the right time, and that shows how important he is to us. We owe him a huge thank you,” Gueye said.
Senegal’s narrow victory sealed a memorable tournament for the reigning champions, but the final will be remembered as much for its tension and controversy as for the solitary goal that decided it.
Despite the drama, Gueye’s strike ensured Senegal lifted the trophy once again, while Morocco were left to rue a missed opportunity on home soil in one of the most scrutinised AFCON finals in recent years.
