Senegal international Idrissa Gueye has played down suggestions that the Lions of Teranga were victims of an attempted poisoning before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco, a match Senegal went on to win 1-0 after extra time.
Responding to claims made by teammate Ismail Jacobs, Gueye firmly rejected the allegation, insisting there was nothing unusual about the team’s preparations before the decisive clash.
“We always travel with our own cook, and we eat well,” Gaye told the Senegalese channel Feeling Dakar.
Jacobs had earlier alleged that three Senegal players fell ill shortly before the final, arguing that the nature and timing of the sickness raised serious questions.
According to the defender, the situation disrupted the team’s plans and affected player availability on the night.
The reported illness was said to have ruled key figures such as Krepin Diatta and Ousmane Niang out of the starting lineup, with Niang allegedly forced to abandon the warm-up and return to the dressing room. Pape Sarr also struggled during the match, falling to the ground in the first half.
Despite the controversy, Senegal held their nerve in a dramatic final that was also marked by a major refereeing incident.
The Lions of Teranga briefly left the pitch and headed for the dressing rooms after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco, a decision that sparked heated protests. The spot kick was ultimately missed by Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz, allowing Senegal to push on and secure victory in extra time.
