Chris Hughton’s stint as the head coach of the Ghana national football team has concluded following their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars’ slim hopes of progressing to the knockout stages were dashed after a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on Monday.
The final blow came as Cameroon, mounting a comeback, secured victory against Gambia.
In response to the disappointing outcome, the Ghana Football Association swiftly terminated Hughton’s coaching role and disbanded the entire technical team.
The official statement from the Ghana FA announced, “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,” further revealing the dissolution of the technical team by the Executive Council.
Hughton, who assumed the coaching position early last year with the mission to rejuvenate the team following a lacklustre World Cup campaign in Qatar, could not guide Ghana beyond the initial stage inAFCON tournament.
The Black Stars, under Hughton’s leadership, suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, managed a draw against Egypt, and encountered a bizarre turn of events in their crucial must-win match against Mozambique, conceding a two-goal lead in the final minutes of added time.
The Ghana Football Association promised to unveil a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars in the coming days.
