A source within the referees’ committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed the committee’s response to the intervention of South African VAR referee Tom Abongile in the Egypt vs. Cape Verde match.
This intervention occurred after Mostafa Mohamed scored a crucial goal for the Egyptian national team in the final minutes of the game, contributing to the Pharaohs’ advancement to the knockout stage of the tournament.
The source stated in exclusive remarks to Watan Sport, “The match observer for the Egypt vs. Cape Verde game spoke with the referee after the match, confirming to him that the officiating team would be implicated due to this error, especially since the intervention was a significant mistake by the South African referee.
He urged him to stay focused during the upcoming matches in the tournament to avoid another mistake that could impact the results of matches in the knockout stages.”

The source continued, “Tom Abongile is a promising referee, and he will continue to officiate in the tournament as usual.
He will not be excluded during the upcoming matches, especially since all the referees selected have been carefully chosen by the CAF referees’ committee, and we have full confidence in everyone.”
