Mohamed Salah marked his Champions League return for Liverpool against Marseille by reaching a historic European milestone with the club.
The Egyptian forward played his 88th match in major European competitions for the Reds, placing him third on the club’s all-time continental appearances list.
According to Opta, Salah has now equalled Ian Callaghan’s tally of 88 European games for Liverpool. Only two club legends are ahead of him: Jamie Carragher, who tops the ranking with 130 appearances, and Steven Gerrard, second with 111 matches.
Salah’s start at the Stade Vélodrome is also notable for another reason. It is his first time in the starting XI since Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven 56 days ago, before his participation with Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot named Salah in a strong lineup to face Marseille, alongside Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike in attack. Behind them, Alexis Mac Allister anchors a midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, while Alisson, Jeremie Frimpong, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez form the back line.
Liverpool entered the game 11th in the overall Champions League league-phase table with 12 points from six matches. Marseille entered the game in 17th with nine points.
