Morocco international Achraf Hakimi is optimistic about the country’s football future despite missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Atlas Lions quest of securing their second AFCON title on home turf dashed after succumbing to a 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a chaotic final, held at the Prince Moulay Stadium last Sunday.

Senegal walked off the field after referee Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty kick to Morocco, minutes after disallowing a goal for the Taranga Lions.

But Sadio Mane intervened and rallied his teammates to continue the match, with Senegal prevailing in the end with a narrow victory, courtesy, Pape Gueye after Brahim Diaz’s dramatic penalty miss in regular time.

However, Hakimi, who plies his trade for Paris Saint Germain has broken his silence, stressing the future of Morocco football looks promising despite the AFCON setback.

Hakimi expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for the tremendous effort made in organizing an exceptional edition of AFCON, which he described as the best in the competition’s history, thanks to the vision and unwavering support for Moroccan football.

He affirmed his teammates gave their all during the tournament and represented Morocco with honor and succeeded in instilling hope in millions of Moroccans both at home and abroad, despite the bitterness of losing the title.

Additionally, Hakimi commended Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation for his unwavering confidence in the national team and his continuous support throughout the Atlas Lions’ journey in the continental competition.

Besides, Hakimi expressed his gratitude to the Moroccan fans, considering them the “twelfth player,” and said that their support was crucial during difficult moments, when the players felt fatigued and the psychological pressure intensified.

Despite the setback, the pacey defender insists the future of Morocco football looks promising.

“The future is promising, and Morocco will continue to progress.” He wrote on social media while reflecting on the tournament.
