The joyous celebrations took a tragic turn as six Guinean supporters lost their lives in the streets of Conakry, the capital city. The incident occurred during national revelries marking the significant advancement of the national Syli towards qualification for the round of 16 in the competition.

Expressing deep condolences and acknowledging the profound sorrow that followed the exuberant scenes, the Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT) issued a poignant tribute to the deceased supporters. Moreover, FEGUIFOOT urgently called for restraint and heightened caution during future gatherings, urging supporters to celebrate responsibly.

Amadou Makadji, the Media Manager of FEGUIFOOT, emphasized the importance of measured celebrations to avoid putting lives at risk. In a statement, he conveyed, “What is important is that our supporters and the public celebrate in a very measured way.

They must be very careful not to put themselves in danger, because the aim of football is to bring joy and not leave families in mourning. We don’t want the dead to be mourned, that’s why we call on everyone to celebrate, but to take care of themselves so that nothing happens to them.”

The call for moderation underscores the federation’s commitment to ensuring that the passion for football, a unifying force, does not lead to tragic consequences. The plea resonates with the broader sentiment that sports celebrations should be occasions of joy and unity, steering clear of any potential harm or loss of life.

As Guinea continues its journey in the AFCON 2023, FEGUIFOOT’s appeal serves as a poignant reminder of the need for collective responsibility to uphold the spirit of the beautiful game without compromising public safety.
