Global statistics site WhoScored has unveiled its best XI for the AFCON 2025/26 tournament in Morocco, throwing up some big surprises and notable omissions.

The lineup is based entirely on players’ average match ratings, with a minimum of five appearances required to qualify.

The ideal team features a strong Egyptian presence with three players included, while hosts Morocco are represented by just one name despite reaching the final. Leading the attack is Egypt captain Mohamed Salah, joined by Senegal star Sadio Mane and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen in a formidable front line.

In goal, Senegal’s Edouard Mendy takes the spot with a rating of 6.91 after playing a key role in their title-winning run. The back four consists of Senegal’s Krepin Diatta at right-back, Egypt duo Yasser Ibrahim and Rami Rabia at centre-back, and Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui on the left.

Midfield is anchored by Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, who earned the highest rating in the XI at 7.80, alongside Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye and Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo. Together, they reflect the influence of Nigeria, Senegal and Ivory Coast in the latter stages of the competition.

Senegal beat Morocco 1–0 in the final, with Nigeria finishing third and Egypt fourth, yet the data-driven selection ignored two major Moroccan stars.

Top scorer Brahim Diaz and best goalkeeper Yassine Bounou both missed out, sparking debate among fans about the balance between statistical models and traditional evaluations of tournament performance.
