Senegal’s head coach Pape Thiaw is facing a potentially severe sanction from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the controversial events that marred the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
The disciplinary measures could include a multi-match suspension, reflecting CAF’s concern over his role in instigating his players to temporarily abandon the pitch.
The Teranga Lions claimed their second AFCON title with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Morocco, courtesy of Pape Gueye’s 94th-minute strike after extra time.
However, the final was overshadowed by chaos when Senegal briefly withdrew from the field after a penalty was awarded to Morocco’s Brahim Díaz.
According to reports, the walkout was prompted by Thiaw, although the players eventually returned following intervention from captain Sadio Mané. Tensions escalated post-match, with Thiaw reportedly involved in a confrontation with Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
CAF is also expected to impose additional disciplinary measures beyond Thiaw’s personal sanctions. Sources indicate that the Senegalese Football Federation could face financial penalties due to crowd disturbances during the final, while select players may also face suspensions or fines for their involvement in the on-field incidents.
These measures underscore CAF’s commitment to upholding discipline and maintaining the integrity of its competitions.
It remains uncertain whether the sanctions would carry over to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Senegal has been drawn in Group I alongside France, Norway, and a European playoff qualifier.
CAF regulations currently stipulate that disciplinary actions are enforceable only within African competitions, though the consequences could still affect the team’s preparation and planning.
CAF had previously condemned the “unacceptable behaviour” of players and officials during the final, highlighting the misconduct directed at match officials and tournament organisers.
The governing body has vowed to refer the matter to competent authorities to ensure appropriate penalties are applied to all individuals found responsible following a thorough investigation.
