The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to impose bans and heavy financial penalties following the chaotic scenes that marred the closing moments of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco.
The dramatic showdown descended into controversy after a late penalty decision in Morocco’s favour sparked furious protests from the Senegalese camp, leading to a brief stoppage as players appeared ready to abandon the pitch on the instructions of their bench.
The situation only de-escalated after Senegal captain Sadio Mane demonstrated leadership and a love for African football by intervening and rallying his teammates to return to the pitch, allowing play to resume.
Although the match was completed and Senegal went on to clinch the title, the tense scenes drew widespread criticism and raised concerns over player conduct, technical area behaviour and overall match control on the biggest stage of African football.
CAF is now understood to be reviewing official reports from match officials and security personnel, with disciplinary action expected against individuals and possibly national associations found to have breached competition regulations.
The governing body has consistently stressed its zero-tolerance stance on actions that bring the game into disrepute, particularly during flagship events like the AFCON final.
With the tournament watched by a global audience, CAF is keen to send a strong message ahead of future competitions, reinforcing discipline, respect for officials and adherence to the laws of the game.
