The Atlas Lions narrowly fell short to the Taranga Lions in a high-stakes final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, held at the Prince Moualay Abdallah Stadium.
Pape Gueye’s strike in the 94th-minute mark ensured Senegal secured the title for the second time in their history, derailing Morocco’s quest to end the 50-year AFCON drought.
Morocco last won the AFCON title in 1976. The defeat against Senegal has prolonged their title ambitions as they will have to wait until 2027 to determine their fate in the game.
The match went to extra time after a pulsating goalless draw in regular time. However, it was Senegal who prevailed to secure the trophy.
Morocco paid for their penalty miss, losing the high-profile final against the West African football giants. Prior to Senegal’s opening goal, Real Madrid star Brahim Diaz had missed a glorious opportunity from the spot.
Senegal has now won two AFCON titles from its four final appearances. The Taranga Lions won their first AFCON title in 2021, defeating Egypt on penalties to secure the coveted trophy.
