FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised African football’s remarkable growth and the vital role of the media after attending a ceremony organised by AIPS Africa in Rabat, Morocco, to honour journalists who have covered at least 10 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Infantino used the occasion to commend CAF, Morocco and all participating teams for delivering what he described as an exceptional AFCON, highlighting the tournament’s quality and global appeal.

“I am proud of CAF, Morocco and all the participating teams during the tournament. It has been absolutely spectacular, top level,” Infantino said. “I’m delighted because this is a World Cup year, and for the first time we will see nine or ten African teams at the FIFA World Cup.”

The FIFA President stressed that the expanded World Cup places African football firmly on the global stage, offering the continent unprecedented visibility.

“This is a World Cup year. Nine African teams will be participating in the World Cup, bringing them to all our respective countries in Africa and around the world,” he added.

Infantino also paid glowing tribute to African sports journalists, acknowledging their contribution to the growth and popularity of football across the continent.

“I commend you, the media, for always being there and reporting on the exploits of our idols. It’s thanks to you that football is what it is today. You are the ones who convey the emotion and the passion,” he noted.

Reflecting on FIFA’s youth development initiatives, Infantino revealed his interaction with young African journalists through FIFA programs.

“I met some young journalists as part of the Young Reporters Program during last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, and it was a great experience for them,” he said.

The AIPS Africa ceremony celebrated decades of dedication by journalists who have chronicled African football’s biggest moments, underlining the strong bond between the game and the storytellers who bring it to life.
