Cape Verde has become the inaugural team to secure a coveted spot in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a commanding 3-0 victory against Mozambique, affirming their dominance in Group B.

Tiago Correia ‘Bebe’, the former Manchester United player, emerged as the hero for Cape Verde, initiating their triumph with a powerful opening goal.

The 33-year-old showcased his persistence and skill throughout the match, with a remarkable long-range free-kick attempt that hit the woodwork.

Despite a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review altering a penalty decision in favour of Mozambique, Cape Verde maintained control. Ryan Mendes capitalized on a defensive error, securing the second goal in the 51st minute.

The victory was sealed with a spectacular long-range shot from Kevin Lenini Pina, underscoring Cape Verde’s impressive performance.

Accumulating six points in Group B, Cape Verde is now assured of a place in the Round of 16.

As the Blue Sharks gear up for their next clash with Egypt, they approach the match with the luxury of nothing to lose as they have won the group.

Meanwhile, Mozambique faces a must-win situation against Ghana on Monday to harbour hopes of advancing.

Cape Verde’s exceptional display positions them as a formidable contender in AFCON 2023, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their continued journey in the tournament.
