Mali police have detained a self-styled “witch doctor” accused of defrauding citizens out of more than €33,000 by promising that his rituals would help the national team defeat Senegal and reach the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The suspect, identified locally as a marabout named Mr Sinayogo, allegedly convinced fans that he possessed spiritual powers capable of influencing match outcomes.
Using social media and word-of-mouth, he solicited donations under the pretense that the money would fund special ceremonies to secure Mali’s success, reportedly collecting around €33,500.
The scheme unravelled after Mali fell 1–0 to Senegal in the quarter-finals, with Iliman Ndiaye scoring the decisive first-half goal.
Angered fans, feeling deceived, reportedly stormed Sinayogo’s home before police intervened, placing him into custody.
He now faces charges including fraud, deception, and exploiting public superstition. The case has ignited debate across Mali, where football fervour is intense and traditional beliefs often intersect with sport.
Many supporters had pinned hopes on the Eagles claiming their first AFCON title, but the quarter-final loss exposed the vulnerability of fan sentiment to manipulation.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect remains under investigation, with prosecutors expected to pursue charges of financial fraud and spreading false claims.
Meanwhile, the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco continues, with hosts Morocco set to face Nigeria in a semifinal clash at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat while Senegal will face Egypt.
