Romelu Lukaku refuses to be Napoli’s second choice as agent issues warning

Romelu Lukaku will not settle for a reduced role at Napoli, with his agent Federico Pastorello insisting the Belgian striker still expects to be treated as a leading figure despite a difficult campaign.

The 33-year-old endured a frustrating 2025-26 season, with injuries and a strained relationship with the club limiting him to just seven appearances across all competitions. Lukaku managed only one goal during that period, raising questions over his place in Napoli’s plans moving forward.

However, Pastorello has made it clear that the experienced forward is unwilling to accept a back-up position or a significant reduction in his status at the club.

Agent rejects idea of Lukaku accepting bench role

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Pastorello dismissed suggestions that Lukaku would be comfortable starting behind another striker in the pecking order.

“Obviously not. He’s an extraordinary player, and he’s proved it,” Pastorello said.

“He’s one of the most prolific strikers in the world. It’s hard for us to accept a situation like that.”

The agent acknowledged that competition for places could exist, especially with Napoli having more than one high-level attacking option, but insisted that performances on the pitch should ultimately determine who leads the line.

“Obviously there might be an initial pecking order, but ultimately it’s what happens on the pitch that decides,” he added.

“Behind Manna’s comments, there could also be financial considerations, given that there are two top-class strikers.”

No pay cut as Lukaku’s contract situation remains unresolved

Lukaku, who remains under contract with Napoli until 2027, is also not prepared to accept financial changes without careful consideration, according to his representative.

Pastorello explained that any discussions over an extension or restructuring of the striker’s deal would involve more than simply adjusting his wages.

“Even proposing a contract extension comes with additional costs. It’s not just about the wages,” he said.

“Romelu has earned this level of contract because of everything he’s accomplished throughout his career.”

The agent suggested that the timing may not yet be right for Napoli to spread Lukaku’s salary over an extended period.

Pastorello also defended the striker’s disappointing season, arguing that circumstances beyond Lukaku’s control contributed to his struggles.

“Last season wasn’t entirely his fault. If he had been allowed to stay and train where he wanted, he might have returned sooner and played a leading role at the World Cup, which, in the end, he did anyway,” he explained.

He added that Lukaku would not remain at a club where he feels unwanted, although he accepted that Napoli’s sporting decisions were within their rights.

“Romelu isn’t the kind of person who stays where he’s not wanted. A club strategy can be perfectly legitimate.”

With Napoli expected to manage a competitive attacking department, Lukaku’s future could become one of the major talking points ahead of the new season as both player and club assess their next steps.
