Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz has been hailed as the standout performer of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, drawing praise from international media for his pivotal role in Morocco’s campaign.
American sports publication The Athletic described the 26-year-old as the “undisputed star” of the tournament, highlighting his consistent scoring and influence on the Atlas Lions’ success.
Díaz has found the net in every AFCON match he has played, including the opening goal in Morocco’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Cameroon. His ability to deliver in crucial moments has been instrumental in Morocco reaching the semi-finals and keeping the dream of a second continental title alive, 49 years after their first triumph in 1976.
The Athletic emphasized that scoring in five different matches is a rare feat, achieved by only three other players in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The publication noted that Díaz has captured the hearts of Moroccan fans, who see him as a symbol of hope and technical brilliance. His performances have coincided with heightened expectations following Morocco’s 2022 World Cup semi-final run, with supporters eagerly anticipating memorable matches in the semi-finals and final.
Beyond the tournament, Díaz’s rise has been notable considering his limited opportunities at Real Madrid under coach Xabi Alonso, having made only three La Liga appearances in the 2025-2026 season.
Despite this, his impact with the national team has been undeniable. The Athletic also highlighted his threat during AFCON qualifiers, including a three-goal haul in Morocco’s 7-0 win over Lesotho, which helped him secure the top scorer award for qualifying.
Coach Walid Regragui reinforced Díaz’s importance, calling him the team’s most valuable player and suggesting he has the potential to become one of the world’s best.
With Morocco now into the semi-finals, Díaz’s form positions him as the defining player of AFCON 2025, capable of shaping the outcome of the tournament.
