Morocco kicked off their AFCON 2023 campaign in style with a convincing 3-0 victory over Tanzania on Wednesday. However, the celebration of Azzedine Ounahi, who netted the team’s second goal, stirred up a bit of controversy. Ounahi’s post-goal celebration involved a unique gesture imitating a crying baby, and some fans speculated it was a response to recent comments made by Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed, who had reportedly criticized the Moroccan player.
In response to the emerging controversy, Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, sought to set the record straight. In a video released by the FRMF (Royal Moroccan Football Federation), Regragui emphasized that Ounahi’s celebration was not intended as a dig at the Egyptians, contrary to some interpretations circulating on social media.
“Azzedine’s celebration has nothing to do with the Egyptians; it’s just a moment of fun between the players. Often our words are misinterpreted,” clarified Regragui.
He continued to share his perspective on the need to avoid unnecessary controversies, citing a previous incident where his comments were misconstrued.
Regragui urged for a more measured response, stating, “People should not amplify things.”
Regarding Ounahi’s sentiments toward Egypt, Regragui highlighted that the player had expressed respect for the Egyptian team and considered them as examples for Morocco.
The coach reiterated the positive regard the team holds for Egypt, emphasizing their quality of football and talented players.
In conclusion, Regragui made it explicit that Ounahi’s celebration should not be linked to any controversy with Egypt.
“Ounahi respects everyone like any Moroccan,” he affirmed, emphasizing that the player had nothing to do with the speculated dispute.
The coach concluded with a call for a more nuanced understanding of such incidents to maintain a spirit of healthy competition and respect in the football community.
