AFCON 2025: Egypt forward Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet ruled out of quarterfinals due to injury
Egypt have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals showdown, following an injury setback to forward Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet.
The Pharaohs, who are seeking for their eighth AFCON title will have to negotiate for victory in the last 8 clash on Saturday, January 10, 2026 without their influential attacker.
Trezeguet succumbed to a torn ankle ligament during the round of 16 match against Benin, making him unavailable for the quarterfinals. The attacker had to be replaced in the second half due to the discomfort.
Despite the setback, the record AFCON holders triumphed over Benin 3-1 after extra-time to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the tournament, being held in Morocco.
“It is impossible for Trezeguet to be fit for the quarter-final match, and we hope he will be fit for the remaining matches.” Mohamed Murad, the media coordinator for Egypt told ON Sport FM radio.
“Trezeguet will be rehabilitated in the coming days, and we hope he recovers quickly.” He added.
Egypt will play against the winner of the match between Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals this weekend.
