CAF confirmed that from 2028 the AFCON will move from its traditional two-year rhythm to a four-year cycle, a move that has triggered intense debate across the continent.
Supporters of the reform point to player welfare and club relations, while critics fear a break from tradition and a loss of momentum for Africa’s flagship tournament.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the Morocco captain described the decision as a potentially positive turning point.
Saïss, who now plays for Al-Sadd, stressed that the change could reduce friction between African internationals and European clubs, where AFCON call-ups often create tension during the domestic season.
From the defender’s perspective, the reform could reshape career trajectories.
He explained that many African players have seen opportunities limited because clubs hesitate to sign or rely on them during AFCON years.
