Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has revealed his tactical approach ahead of his side’s crucial clash with host nation Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Eagles will face the Atlas Lions on Friday, December 26, in their second Group A fixture of the tournament, with Saintfiet making it clear that defensive discipline will be central to Mali’s game plan.
Speaking during his pre-match interview, the Belgian tactician admitted he intends to adopt a cautious approach against Morocco, insisting that a defensive setup has proven effective against the North Africans in the past. Saintfiet expressed confidence that the same strategy could once again deliver a positive result.
“Will we park the bus against Morocco? I’ve played Morocco only once, back in 2019.
“We won 1-0 by parking the bus with only 21% possession. So, I want to maintain my 100% record against them,” Tom Saintfiet said.
Mali go into the encounter sitting third in Group A with one point following a draw against Zambia in their opening match. The West Africans are aware that a victory would significantly boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.
Morocco, meanwhile, are in a more comfortable position and require only a draw from Friday’s contest to confirm their place in the next round of the competition.
