Senegal coach Pape Thiaw praised his players’ attitude and discipline after their commanding 3–0 victory over Botswana in Tangier to open their AFCON 2025 campaign.

The Senegal were in control from start to finish, with Nicolas Jackson scoring twice before substitute Cherif Ndiaye added a late third.

Thiaw highlighted how difficult it was to break down Botswana’s deep and compact defensive block, but felt his side handled the challenge with maturity. He noted that Senegal created numerous chances, especially in the first half, when goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko repeatedly denied Jackson, Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye before the breakthrough finally arrived five minutes before the interval.

The coach was particularly pleased with the team’s professionalism, insisting that this was the real takeaway from the performance.

“We faced a very strong team, with a deep and compact defensive block. We could have scored more, but what stands out most is my team’s commitment and discipline,” he said.

“What I take away from this match is the team’s professionalism. The players followed instructions and got the job done.”
