Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres has been named Sweden’s best striker of 2025, edging out Liverpool forward Alexander Isak in a closely watched national accolade.
The recognition places Gyokeres ahead of Isak, of Eritrean heritage, whose own club season has struggled to gain momentum despite high expectations following his move to Anfield.
Gyokeres’ award arrives during a challenging first campaign in North London. Since joining Arsenal in the summer, the 27 year old has scored four goals across 14 Premier League appearances.
His domestic output has contrasted sharply with his prolific form earlier in the year in Portugal, where he enjoyed a remarkable spell with Sporting.
Gyokeres scored 39 league goals in 33 appearances for Sporting, playing a decisive role as the club secured both the league title and the domestic cup.
Reflecting on the past year, Gyokeres described the period as one of sharp contrasts and major milestones. “It has been a year full of events,” he said.
“We won the league and the cup with Sporting and it was incredible to be part of history,” Gyokeres added, recalling his time in Lisbon.
“Then, the transfer to Arsenal, being in this environment and playing here is fantastic,” he said. “I am very proud and happy with the award. I will take many positive things with me from this year,” Gyokeres concluded.
Isak, meanwhile, has also endured a difficult adjustment period. His Liverpool stint has yet to deliver consistent goals, mirroring Gyokeres’ struggles in England.
Both forwards have found chances harder to come by than expected, with confidence and rhythm proving elusive as the season has progressed.
Gyokeres’ difficulties were evident against Wolves earlier this month, when he registered only 15 touches and a single effort on goal, which drifted wide.
Arsenal’s broader form has suffered during that run. A once commanding six point lead at the summit has been reduced to two following a series of subdued performances.
