AFCON 2025: Egypt end nine-year winless run against Nigeria with friendly victory
Egypt claimed a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Nigeria on Tuesday night, ending a nine-year wait for a win against the Super Eagles in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium.
The Pharaohs took the lead in the first half through Mahmoud Saber before Nigeria responded via Chidozie Awaziem.
However, Mostafa Mohamed’s second-half strike ultimately proved decisive, handing Egypt their first triumph over Nigeria since 2016.
The encounter was a warm-up match for both countries ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, making it a key test for head coaches Hossam Hassan and Eric Sekou Chelle as they continue to shape his squad.
With limited preparation time, the The Pharaohs and the Super Eagles showed encouraging signs early on, despite having limited training sessions together before the game.
Nigeria began confidently, enjoying spells of possession and pressing high. Bright Osayi-Samuel’s pace provided an outlet on the right flank, while Paul Onuachu’s physical presence caused problems for the Egyptian defence.
Chidera Ejuke showed moments of individual brilliance but struggled to deliver the final pass.
Egypt found success targeting Nigeria’s left side, and their pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Ahmed Sayed Zizo burst down the flank and squared for Saber to finish into an empty net.
Nigeria responded well and drew level before halftime, with Awaziem heading home from close range after a Sanusi free-kick was only partially cleared.
Chelle made several changes at the break, introducing Ademola Lookman, Cyriel Dessers and debutant Tochukwu Nnadi, among others.
The changes disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm, and Egypt capitalised in the 52nd minute when Mostafa Mohamed scored amid Nigerian appeals for offside.
Nigeria pushed for an equaliser late on, creating chances from set-pieces and aerial deliveries, but Egypt held firm to secure the win.
The Super Eagles now turn their attention to the Africa Cup of Nations, where they open their campaign against Tanzania on December 23.
Egypt open their AFCON adventure December 22 against Zimbabwe at Stade Adrar in Agadir.
