AFCON 2025: DR Congo Leopards step up preparations as Spanish training camp gathers pace

DR Congo’s national team have begun to raise the tempo of their preparations after launching a focused training camp in Spain, where the Leopards have started physical and tactical work in earnest.

The camp officially opened last Saturday, with the first group of players arriving early in the morning and heading straight into training.

The coaching staff wasted no time, using the opening session to set standards and establish rhythm.

From the outset, the session reflected intensity, concentration, and clear objectives, despite the absence of several internationals yet to report for duty.

The technical staff aim to build cohesion quickly and lay a solid foundation for the upcoming challenges.

Even with an incomplete squad, the players present showed strong commitment and enthusiasm.

Every drill carried purpose, and the group responded positively to instructions.

This first workout marked the true beginning of the Leopards’ build-up, setting the tone for the days ahead.

By the end of Sunday’s programme, 16 players had already joined the camp. Goalkeepers Mathieu Epolo and Timothy Fayulu trained alongside defenders Dylan Batubinsika, Bryan Cipenga, and Joris Kayembe.

The midfield unit included Charles Pickel, Mario Stroeykens, Edo Kayembe, and Arthur Masuaku, while the attacking options featured Samuel Essende, Nathanael Mbuku, Simon Banza, Cédric Bakambu, Meschack Elia, Fiston Mayele, and Michael-Ange Balikwisha.

This group offered a blend of experience and emerging talent, giving the coaching staff immediate tactical flexibility.

The mix of seasoned internationals and younger players allowed the staff to begin shaping balance within the squad. Senior figures brought leadership and structure, while the new generation injected energy and ambition.

Training sessions reflected that dynamic, with players pushing standards and responding well to competitive drills.

More arrivals are expected in the coming hours as the squad edges closer to full strength.

The technical team plans to increase training intensity gradually, ensuring players reach optimal physical condition without unnecessary risk.

Each session focuses on improving collective movement, sharpening understanding between units, and strengthening match fitness.

The atmosphere inside the camp remains calm, disciplined, and purposeful. Players have embraced the workload and shown clear determination to make the most of this preparation period.

This Spanish camp represents a decisive phase in the Leopards’ journey, offering the platform needed to fine-tune performances and build momentum ahead of upcoming fixtures.
