‘The club won a lot with him’ – Slot insists he wants Mohamed Salah to remain at Liverpool
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his desire for star forward Mohamed Salah to remain at the club, despite an escalating public dispute that has cast a shadow over the Egyptian’s future at Anfield.
The manager’s comments on Friday, December 12, 2025, came just days after Salah’s explosive interview in which he claimed a broken relationship with Slot and feeling “thrown under the bus” by the club.
Addressing the media ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Brighton, Slot made it clear he wants the legendary goalscorer to stay.
“We decided as a club – and I was part of that decision – not to take him to Milan. I am always in contact with them [sporting director Richard Hughes and chief executive Michael Edwards] but when it comes to the decision making of the line-up or the squad, they leave that open to me.
“That’s not to say I don’t talk to them. Mainly Richard, not Michael. The decision to play a player or have them in the squad is entirely up to me.”
Do you want Salah to stay? “I have no reasons to not want him to stay. This club has won a lot of games with him.”
The dispute intensified after Salah was benched for three consecutive games and subsequently omitted from the squad for the UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan earlier this week.
The club stated the decision to leave him out was made in the best interest of all parties following the nature and timing of his public comments.
Slot confirmed a face-to-face meeting with Salah was scheduled for Friday to discuss the situation and determine his involvement in the upcoming weekend fixture.
“What I need is a conversation with him and the next time I speak about Mo should be with him and not in here,” Slot stated.
Despite the manager’s preference for a resolution, he admitted to having “no clue” if Salah had played his final game for Liverpool, leaving the Egyptian’s future highly uncertain.
Salah is a club icon, the third-highest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history, but his future has been a subject of intense speculation, particularly with the Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching.
