Barcelona coach Hansi Flick says he has no issue with Lamine Yamal’s reaction to being substituted, insisting the teenager displayed “the right attitude” during Wednesday’s Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Flick addressed the incident after the forward appeared visibly frustrated when replaced late in the match.
Yamal, who has Moroccan and Equato-Guinean heritage, delivered an energetic performance before being withdrawn for Roony Bardghji in the closing minutes.
Flick explained that the decision was tactical and influenced by the youngster’s earlier booking.
Flick stressed that Yamal’s response reflected his hunger to compete. He told reporters that the winger had felt “slight disappointment” because he believed he could continue playing, adding that such reactions were normal for ambitious young footballers.
Flick said he understood the emotion, noting that every player wants to stay on the pitch when the match is tight.
“He had a slight disappointment, but he had a yellow card and we needed fresh legs. It’s not a problem.
“It is what it is. I understand him; everyone wants to play, and he believes he can play 100 minutes. He’s young. It’s a good attitude. I have no problem with it. I was a player myself. I accept it.”
“I’m happy, these are three important points. We’re back. The match wasn’t easy. We created quite a few chances and opportunities.”
Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory thanks to a brace from defender Jules Kounde, who delivered two composed finishes that ultimately separated the sides.
Flick acknowledged that he had not expected Kounde to be the standout goal threat on the night, but praised the Frenchman’s mentality and focus. He said their approach created the space needed to take control of the contest and credited his staff for preparing the team effectively.
“I didn’t expect it. Their mentality is important for us. But I’m very happy. We have the space we needed. They know what needs to be done.
“I also congratulate my staff, who have done a good job. I’m happy to have come back.”
