AFCON 2023: Senegal secures commanding 3-0 victory over Gambia

Senegal

Senegal, initiated its campaign in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a resounding 3-0 triumph against Gambia. The Lions showcased their formidable capabilities, affirming their status as frontrunners for the ultimate title.

Under the scorching heat of Yamoussoukro, Senegal, led by coach Aliou Cissé, confronted the Gambia in an anticipated clash.

Despite challenging weather conditions, with temperatures soaring to 34 degrees Celsius accompanied by high humidity, the Lions demonstrated their determination to defend their championship.

The starting lineup featured stalwarts such as Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ismaila Sarr, Edouard Mendy, and Abdou Diallo. On the opposing side, Gambia’s coach Tom Saintfiet enlisted their star player, Musa Barrow.

Senegal wasted no time asserting dominance, securing an early lead with a goal from Pape Gueye in the 4th minute.

Gueye, who currently faces a four-month suspension with OM but was granted a starting position, capitalized on an excellent delivery from Sadio Mané, burying the ball into the net with a powerful shot.

The first half saw Senegal maintaining control, strategically managing their lead despite a temporary break due to a satellite outage caused by adverse weather conditions.

During this interlude, Senegal allowed Gambia some possession but remained potent in set-piece opportunities.

As the match approached halftime, the tide turned decisively in Senegal’s favor. Gambia’s midfielder, Ebo Adams, received a red card after a VAR review for a significant foul on Lamine Camara.

Reduced to ten men, Gambia faced an uphill battle in the second half.

Senegal capitalized on the numerical advantage, extending their lead in the 52nd minute with a well-executed goal from Lamine Camara, securing the 3-0 victory.

The match showcased Senegal’s tactical prowess and resilience, establishing them as formidable contenders in the quest for AFCON 2023 glory.
