Nigeria legend Sunday Oliseh wants Wilfred Ndidi named Super Eagles captain ahead of AFCON 2025
Former Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh has praised Wilfred Ndidi’s rising leadership role, while tipping him for the captaincy position ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The 35th edition of the continental showpiece has been scheduled to take place in the North African country between December 2025 and January 2026, with 24 nations set to battle for the covetous trophy.
Per Oliseh, Ndidi commands major respect within the squad and plays consistently, viewing him as a perfect captain for the national team heading into the AFCON.
“I think nobody doubts the respect the players have for Ndidi… he’s a player that plays every game. I think Ndidi is already the captain anyways because he captained the last game.” he said on Oliseh Insight Podcast.
Oliseh, who previously captained and coached Nigeria, urged Ndidi – or whoever wears the armband – to show the proactive leadership style he and the late Stephen Keshi were known for.
Nigeria finished as runners-up in the last AFCON, held in Ivory Coast after falling 2–1 to the Elephants in a tightly contested final.
The Super Eagles are paired in Group C against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
The three-rime AFCON holders will open their AFCON account against Tanzania on December 23, 2025 in Morocco.
