Zamalek to retain Ahmed Abdel Raouf as substantive head coach
Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek SC have reportedly opted to retain Ahmed Abdel Raouf as head coach.
The decision follows a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup over the weekend, a match that had reportedly placed Raouf’s position under scrutiny.
The coach had taken over on an interim basis from Yannick Ferreira, prompting speculation that a change might be imminent after the high-profile clash against the Soweto giants.
According to reports from Egypt, sporting director John Edward has chosen to keep Raouf in charge, citing three main reasons.
First, the team’s performances in the Confederation Cup, including a win over ZESCO United and a draw with Chiefs, reflect a promising start under his leadership.
Second, financial considerations played a role, with the club still grappling with a well-documented crisis and former coach Ferreira awaiting the remainder of his contract payout.
Finally, the club is seeking stability, believing that Raouf can maintain the team’s current form.
Zamalek currently sit fourth in the Egyptian Premier League, seven points adrift of surprise leaders Ceramica Cleopatra.
